Detectives from Victoria Police Crime Command are investigating an incident at Avalon Airport on Thursday afternoon.
Police were called to the airport around 2:20 pm after reports that a male had boarded a commercial flight armed with a firearm.
A 17-year-old boy was swiftly detained by the flight crew and passengers.
Initial investigations suggest the teen gained access to the tarmac by breaching a security fence. Officers later located two bags and a vehicle linked to him.
As a precaution, the Bomb Response Unit was called in to assess the bags.
Fortunately, no one was physically harmed during the incident.
The teenager, from the Ballarat region, remains in police custody and is expected to be interviewed.
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities confirm there is no ongoing threat to the community.
