Homicide detectives have made an arrest following the violent death of an elderly man in Geelong overnight.

Emergency services rushed to a hotel on Brougham Street around 11:50 pm after reports of a seriously injured man in an upstairs accommodation room.

Inside, they found an 82-year-old New Zealand national suffering from critical injuries. Despite desperate efforts, he died at the scene.

This afternoon, police tracked down and arrested a 34-year-old Geelong man on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne’s CBD.

He is now in custody and is expected to be questioned over the shocking incident.

Authorities are treating the case as a homicide, and the investigation remains active.
