Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Stonehaven last night.

Investigators understand a white Holden Berlina was travelling eastbound on the Hamilton Highway about 9pm.

It is believed the Berlina swerved onto the opposite side of the Highway before colliding with a red Holden Barina.

A 12-year-old girl, who was a rear passenger in the Barina, sadly died at the scene.

The 36-year-old female driver of the Barina was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Her 38-year-old male passenger was also taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Another rear passenger, a 7-year-old girl, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The four occupants of the Barina are from Lismore, Victoria.

A 28-year-old man from North Shore, believed to be the driver of the Berlina was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

He remains in hospital under police guard and will be interviewed by police.

His 21-year-old male passenger, also from North Shore, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Investigators are following up reports the car was seen overtaking or attempting to overtake other motorists on the Hamilton Highway just prior to the collision.

They are also appealing for anyone who saw the white Holden Berlina earlier in the evening as it is understood it was seen driving in an erratic manner.

The incident, on Evans Road in Lovely Banks around 7.45pm, wasn’t reported to police at the time however as part of our investigation we now have images and moving vision of the car.

The images and vision has been released in the hope it will assist the investigation and any witnesses who may have seen the car.
