Waurn Ponds Leisurelink faced an abrupt closure following the recent revelation that three individuals, all confirmed carriers of the waterborne parasite cryptosporidium, had visited the facility within the past three weeks.

Alarming reports underscored a surge in cryptosporidium cases, colloquially known as crypto, prompting heightened concerns among health authorities.

Crypto, a resilient parasite notorious for causing diarrheal illnesses and exhibiting remarkable resistance to chlorine disinfection, has manifested in 50 cases of cryptosporidiosis characterized by gastro related symptoms in Greater Geelong this year alone, as per data from the health department.

Symptoms of cryptosporidiosis encompass watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, vomiting, and fever.

With an incubation period ranging from one to 12 days, the affected individuals experienced a delayed onset of symptoms post-infection.

Eugene Athan, director of the Barwon South West public health unit, disclosed that his health protection team had noted a surge in cryptosporidium cases across the region.

Collaborating with the health department, they diligently implemented measures to safeguard the community against further escalation of the parasite.

The transmission of cryptosporidium occurs through various means, including the consumption of contaminated food or water, as well as person-to-person or animal-to-person spread.

In light of these findings, the health department urges stringent precautions to maintain pool hygiene.

These include thorough pre-swimming showers, adherence to strict hand hygiene practices, changing diapers exclusively in designated areas, refraining from ingesting pool water, and abstaining from swimming if one has experienced diarrhea within the past two weeks.

The closure of Waurn Ponds Leisurelink serves as a precautionary step to mitigate the potential spread of cryptosporidium within the community, as health authorities intensify efforts to curb the rising cases of this waterborne parasite.
